Bloodstone

Bloodstone, also known as heliotrope, is a variety of chalcedony: a microcrystalline form of quartz. Its dark green base is caused by inclusions of chlorite or amphibole, while the red to reddish-brown spots are caused by iron oxide such as hematite, resembling drops of blood and giving the stone its name. The name heliotrope comes from the Greek helios (sun) and trepein (to turn), referring to the ancient belief that the stone, when placed in water, reflected sunlight with a blood-red hue.
