Larimar's history
Larimar, also known as the "Caribbean Blue Stone", is a rare blue-green gemstone found only in the Dominican Republic. Although the stone was only discovered in the twentieth century, it quickly gained a reputation as a unique and valuable stone.
The discovery of Larimar dates back to 1916, when a Dominican priest named Miguel Mendez discovered the stone near the coast of Barahona Bay.
However, in the 1970s, Larimar really became known when an American artist named Norman Rilling took the stone to the United States and started using it in jewelry. It turned out to be a great success and Larimar quickly started to gain popularity as a unique and valuable ornamental stone.
The unique blue-green color of Larimar is attributed to the presence of copper and lime in the stone. The color ranges from a bright blue to a deep teal. The stone is often used in jewelry such as rings, earrings, pendants and bracelets.
In the Dominican Republic, where the stone originates, Larimar has an important economic and cultural significance. The stone is one of the main sources of income for the local population and is often used in traditional arts and crafts.
Where Does The Last Name Larimar Come From?
The name 'Larimar' is derived from the combination of the name of the daughter of the stone's discoverer, Miguel Mendez, Larissa and "mar" (Spanish for sea), because the stone was found near the coast of the Bay of Barahona in the Dominican Republic.
