Where does the name Amazonite come from?
The Amazonite gemstone is named after the Amazon River in South America, where the stone was first discovered. The stone is a variety of quartz and contains small amounts of chromium and iron, which explains why the stone has its unique green color.
How do you recognize the quality of Amazonite pendant?
One of the most important factors to consider when judging the quality of amazonite is its color. Amazonite's most sought-after color is a bright and deep green shade, which is often combined with white veins or spots. However, amazonite can also be found in other colors such as blue, pink, purple and yellow.
Clarity is also an important factor in assessing the quality of amazonite. A stone with good clarity will be clear and free of impurities or inclusions. A stone with less clarity will be more blurry or dull.
Finally, the finish of the stone is also important. A stone with a good finish will have a smooth surface and no scratches or damage. A stone with a poor finish will be more uneven or damaged.
The History of Amazonite
The Amazonite gemstone has been valued since ancient times for its beauty and medicinal properties. The ancient Egyptians believed that the stone protected them from evil spirits and helped them communicate with the spirit world. The Incas in South America also used the stone for religious and medicinal purposes.
In the 19th century, European gem traders began to import the stone and sell it as jewelry. The Amazonite pendant became popular as a fashion accessory and was often worn by women as a symbol of wealth and elegance.
In the 20th century, geologists discovered that the Amazonite gemstone also occurs in other parts of the world, such as Russia, Madagascar and the United States. This made the stone more accessible to jewelry designers and reduced its price.
