The History of Sapphire
The sapphire is a precious gemstone with a rich history. The stone comes from Sri Lanka, and has been known since ancient times. The sapphire was already mentioned in an ancient Sanskrit poem from the year 400 BC, and has been mined in the quarries of Sri Lanka since the 5th century BC. The sapphire was already considered a symbol of royal power and wealth, and was often used in jewelry and crowns worn by kings and queens.
In the Middle Ages, the sapphire also became known in Europe, where the stone quickly became a beloved piece of jewelery among the wealthy elite. The sapphire was also often used in religious symbolism, because the stone was seen as a sign of wisdom and purity. The sapphire remained a popular gemstone in Europe until the 19th century when new deposits of the stone were found in Sri Lanka. The sapphire was then again massively exported to Europe, and has since been one of the most coveted gemstones in the world.
